Dan Ciuriak

Biography

We welcome Dan Ciuriak joined the Infinite-Sum Modeling Inc. (ISM) as an honorary advisor in May 2016, focusing on the international trade research. Dan is the director and principal of Ciuriak Consulting Inc, based in Ottawa. He is also a senior fellow in residence with the C.D. Howe Institute, the centre for International Government Innovation (CIGI), and an associate with BKP Development Research and Consulting GmbH of Munich, Germany. He holds a master’s degree in economics from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.


Previously, he was deputy chief economist at Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT), with responsibility for economic analysis in support of trade negotiations and trade litigation and served as contributing editor of DFAIT’s Trade Policy Research series (2001–2007 and 2010 editions). He has also held several other positions at DFAIT, including as deputy to the chair of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Economic Committee and as finance counsellor at Canada’s Embassy in Germany.


Before joining DFAIT, Dan worked at the Department of Finance, including from 1983 to 1990 with the Financial Sector Policy Branch, where he served as chief of the Financial Institutions Section and project director for the Financial Institutions Reform Project. Dan chaired the Inter-Departmental Legislative Review Committee, which guided the development of the 1992 reforms that overhauled the federal financial institutions statutes — the Bank Act, the Insurance Companies Act, the Trust and Loan Companies Act and the Cooperative Credit Associations Act.
